Save That Fat!!!
Slow down there Pardner!!!
You just found yourself at a local store and purchased what appears to be
a nice great big juicy brisket
But oh no!!! There’s copious amounts of FAT!!!
I like fat as much as the next guy, but no one likes that much fat.
I think i’ll just trim it off the top and throw it a (SMACK WITH A WOODEN SPOON)
in the tone of your rough around the edges grandmother “you are going to use every bit of that animal, just how God intended!”
…Whos grandmother was that??? meh, doesn’t really matter, but that crazy old lady was probably right. But what do i do with all this fat? I personally don’t feel like eating it myself.
That is where this article comes into play, here is a small list of things you can do besides throw that perfectly good fat into the trash…
1. Cook With It
Fat from an animal is just as viable for cooking as the oils that you buy pre-bottled at the store, so go hog wild with frying up some of your favorite foods. Sometimes in the morning, I want my eggs to have a “meatier” flavor. Cooking them with animal fat is one quick and easy way to accomplish this. Simply heat it up in your cast iron to “render” the fat - it will appear to melt off into an oil that you can then pour into a jar and keep for future cooking.
2. Make Candles
This one can be particularrly useful for those who might be sensitive to all the artificial fragrances found in many commercially sold candles. here is a quick little tutorial to show you just how easy this process can be :D!
This could be a nice way to make some money on the side by selling your homemade candles at a local flea market. Thus increasing your ability to fuel your meat addiction!!!
3. Freeze it and store it for later
Frozen fat with keep indefinitely, keeping it in a jar or any other container in a freezer will allow you to use this unrendered fat for any of the above listed activities at anytime you feel like it :).
Conclusion
I didn’t say that this was going to be an extensive list, but even this small number of alternatives in my opionion is better than throwing it in the trash. And certainly better than letting it go down your sink.
